"We looked into a beautiful and circular room in the dome—it is 26 or 27 feet diameter—has eight circular windows and a handsome sky-light. It was designed for a lady's drawing-room when built, but soon found, on account of its situation in the dome, to be too inconvenient for that use, and was abandoned to miscellaneous purposes."

The Dome Room may be reserved for dinners or lectures on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. On occasion, it may also be reserved during business hours for lectures, but will remain open to the public during those events.

Today, doctoral students defend their dissertations in the North Oval Room, and many events (including monthly dinners for residents of the Lawn) are held inside the Dome Room. Other events are held on the steps of the Rotunda, which is also the traditional starting point for students streaking the Lawn.

The Dome Room as restored today, with the doors to the Cuddy at the back Adding a dome to one’s house was unheard-of in America during Jefferson’s time. Domes are complicated to engineer and construct, and when Jefferson brought the idea back from his stint in Europe in the 1780s, it may have seemed an impossible folly.

The dome on Monticello is visible on the back of the US 5¢ coin. Two flights of very steep and narrow stairs lead to the room on Monticello’s third floor. The use of the Dome Room is not known with certainty; at times it served as a bedroom for a married grandson, as a storeroom, and probably as a playroom for the grandchildren.

The project was completed in time for the bicentennial celebration, and on July 10, 1976, the Dome Room was the site of a luncheon for Queen Elizabeth II, hosted by Virginia Governor Mills E. Godwin. By the spring of 1998, the marble bases of the columns on the south side of the Rotunda required repair.
