Rather than costs of raw materials, they're spending that money on laborers. So if they spend three months a year actually running the farm, they make 1/4th of the profit they'd make in a year of crafting.

I really like the idea of looking at the Monster Manual for plant-based monsters, both as threats to the farm, but also as opportunities to gain new seeds.
