Olivia Margaret "Liv" Benson [2] is a fictional character and the main protagonist of the NBC police procedural drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay.

Captain Olivia Margaret "Liv" Benson (Born February 7, 1968) is the commanding officer of the Manhattan Special Victims Unit in New York City. Before taking over SVU, Benson worked as an SVU detective and she was partnered with Detective Elliot Stabler for over thirteen years.

Olivia Benson was a female senior Detective, Sergeant, Lieutenant and eventually Captain of the Special Victims Unit at the NYPD. Throughout her years as a detective, she worked side-by-side with Nick Amaro, Elliot Stabler, Odafin Tutola, John Munch, and Amanda Rollins.
