2020年3月14日 · Deadspin was owned by Gizmodo Media Group, who owned a conglomerate of sites covering many topics with a liberal bent. GMG got bought out by a private equity group, and that group soon clashed with the writers and readers as they tried to change a lot of the culture and politics of the site while smothering the sites in annoying autoplay ads.

Deadspin is, was, part of what remained of the Gawker empire. The various subsides of what was once Gawker has always drawn criticism and drama from different groups over the years. Some of Deadspin’s co-websites have entire subreddits dedicated to hating on them that have been going at it for around a decade.

For anyone to compare today’s Deadspin to the original Deadspin, is fucking wild. Good riddance to whatever it became. But I do miss the Deadspin that covered shit like the Manti Te’o stuff. That was when the site was a must-read, before ESPN, Barstool, etc.

2024年3月11日 · Even before deadspin died the first time, their content absorbed a lot of the lazy social commentary and Trump obsession that was all over the gawker (or whoever owned it at the time) brand. As a standalone site covering sports, it didn’t have enough quality sports writing, or anything it could call it’s own in terms of perspective.

Deadspin lost its audience long before the incident in 2019 when a huge advertising deal fell through because they couldn't supply the traffic. The ultimatum and walkout happened within like hours of that.
