The remote and isolated Gamkaskloof Valley (Die Hel) has a rich ecological, archaeological and cultural history and is a must to visit! Declared a Cultural Historical Site within a World Heritage Site, it deserves special care to ensure it is preserved for future generations.

De Hel Nature Area is a riverine valley adjoining Table Mountain below Rhodes Drive to the northeast of Constantia Nek. The upper reaches of the Spaanschemat River runs through this 21,3 ha natural area, and environmental surveys of De Hel show that the site remains in a near natural condition.

This hidden gem is perfect for an after work stroll, to clear your mind of all the stress of the day. All you need is 45 minutes and a pair of comfortable shoes. The trail covers a large expanse of the De Hel forest, and it is more beautiful than pictures can capture. We would highly recommend you give this trail a try.

De Hel is densely covered in trees and its steep slopes run down to the riverbed. At the lower end of the reserve, a flat piece of land known as ‘the Meadow’ is still home to pockets of fruit trees and garden plants.</p><p>De Hel is linked to ancient cattle tracks originating from the Khoi-Khoi pastoralists in the Cape.
