During the Solomons campaign, Private First Class Steinaker was killed in action at the Matanikau River, Guadalcanal, on 9 October 1942, when his unit was attacked during a heavy Japanese offensive. The small group of marines fought furiously against the overwhelming enemy forces and exacted a tremendous toll.

The USS Steinaker is a FRAM I Gearing (DD-710) Class destroyer. In 1952 STEINAKER was decommissioned and entered the yards for conversion to a USS EUGENE GREENE (DDR-711) Class Radar Picket Destroyer. When recommissioned in 1953, she was fitted with the latest early warning radar for use in long range detection of enemy aircraft.

The work was completed on 28 February 1953 and shakedown at Guantanamo Bay followed. She made her first deployment to the 6th Fleet as a picket destroyer from 16 September to 3 February 1954.

2025年2月4日 · The second USS Steinaker (DD-863/DDR-863/DD-863) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy. Donald Baur Steinaker was born on 15 September 1922 at Syracuse, New York. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on 20 March 1941.

The second USS Steinaker (DD-863/DDR-863/DD-863) was a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy, named for Private First Class Donald Baur Steinaker, USMCR (1922–1942) who was killed in action on Guadalcanal and posthumously awarded the Navy Cross.

2022年9月7日 · In 1964, she obtained her FRAM conversion and finally received the modern antisubmarine warfare weapons to help her protect the fleet. In July of 1964 she became DD-863 again. The Steinaker was a part of the Middle East Force in 1967, and in March of 1968 she left Norfolk for her first deployment to the Western Pacific.
