RPC-1 and RPC-2 are designations applied to firmware for DVD drives. Older DVD drives use RPC-1 firmware, which allows DVDs from any region to play. Newer drives use RPC-2 firmware, which enforces DVD region coding at the hardware level. See DVD region code#Computer DVD drives for further information.

In order to manufacture a DVD drive one has to obtain a license from the DVD CCA (Copy Control Association). The licensing terms state that every drive must support certain mechanisms, among others CSS (Content Scrambling System) and region code. The latter has only become mandatory for DVD-ROM drives starting from the first of January 2000.

RPC, Regional Playback Control, is a system utilized by DVD manufacturers to limit the use of DVD’s to limited geographic regions. RPC is implemented on most commercial DVD’s and on most DVD players. On computer-based DVD players, there are two Phases of RPC. RPC Phase I allowed software implementations of RPC.

Most drives up to the 3rd generation support what is called RPC-1. This simply means that the DVD-ROM drives do not play a part in controlling the playback region. It is solely dependent on the decoder. Later drives, like the Pioneer 114 (10X) or newer are factory set to RPC-2 (due to the persistent nagging of the DVD Forum).
