Are the Wario and Donkey Kong franchises actually fairly similar?

Because even ignoring the obvious way that Wario Forums took inspiration from DK Vine (with the cameo/crossover games forum and what not): Both started with a game that doesn't really fit into the franchise as it is now (Donkey Kong arcade games, Super Mario Land 2)...
