The Baureihe 103 is a class of electric locomotives in Germany, originally operated by Deutsche Bundesbahn. For a long period, they were perceived as flagships of the DB rolling stock. In the decades following World War II, the Deutsche Bundesbahn focused on purchasing a large number of standardised electric locomotives.

Die Lokomotiven der Baureihe 103 (Vorserie: E 03) der Deutschen Bundesbahn (DB) sind schwere sechsachsige Elektrolokomotiven für den schnellen Reisezugverkehr. DB planed to replace class 103 by class 120. But class 103 was better than class 120 in high speed performance, so class 103 continued its service. From 1991, class 103 was operated for `Lufthansa Airport Express` between Frankufurt Airport and Stuutgart Airport.

Today both are common sights across the German rail network and are popular with railfans and commuters, both local and foreign. But what exactly did they replace? For over 30 years, the flagship locomotive seen on many major passenger routes was the DB Class 103, whose distinctive look and popularity have seen it run services even into the 2010s.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn Class 103 electric locomotives are arguably one of the most well-known and instantly recognisable in the world. 149 of these 9,980hp, 200km/h machines – 4 prototypes ( 103 001 – 103 004 ) and 145 production locos ( 103 101 – 103 245 ) – were built, but only 17 remain extant.
