The GE C40-8W is a 6-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems from 1989 to 1994. Often referred to as the Dash light series, it is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives. This locomotive model is distinguished from the predecessor Dash 8-40C by the addition of a newer "wide" or "safety" cab.

The GE Dash 8.5-40CW was a 6-axle a 4,000 hp (2,800 kW) diesel-electric locomotive originally built by GE Transportation Systems, rebuilt by Norfolk Southern at its shops in Roanoke, VA. The first locomotive started rebuild 2012, with eleven more being rebuilt until 2016.

The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW was produced by General Electric between 1989 and 1993 as a follow-up to the successful Dash 8-40C locomotive. The most distinguishing feature of this model was the introduction of GE’s version of the wide-nose “North American Safety Cab.”

2019年1月25日 · A new run of 1:32-proportion General Electric (GE) Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive has been released by MTH in its RailKing One-Gauge product line. The model has a polycarbonate body, two motors with flywheels, and Proto-Sound 3.0 digital sound.

8452, Class D8-40CW, was built in October 1994, #48116, as Locomotive Maintenance Services 712. It was sold as NS PRR 8452 and became NS 8452, Class D8-40CW. 8442, Class D8-40CW, was built in November 1994, #48207, as LMS 743. It was renumbered Conrail 6269, Class C40-8W, in 1997 and then became NS PRR 8442.
