The 122 mm (4.8 in) (originally 48 lines) calibre was adopted by Russia in the early 20th century, becoming very important to Soviet artillery during the Second World War. Development of the D-30 began in the 1950s, as a replacement for the M-30 howitzer , widely used in divisional and regimental artilleries.

The D-30 is designed to defeat unsheltered and covered manpower, weapons and military equipment of the enemy at the forward edge of the battle area and to the regiment's mission depth.

Original Soviet production D-30 with 2A18 ordnance with multislotted muzzle brake. Improved Soviet D-30 introduced in 1978. Features new cradle, improved recoil system and 2A18M ordnance with double baffle muzzle brake. Sometimes called D-30M. Chinese production version similar to original D-30.

Early models of the D-30 had a multi-baffle muzzle brake while the D-30M has a double-baffle muzzle brake. The gun has a semiautomatic, vertically-sliding, wedge-type breechblock. It can be towed by a truck (Ural-375 or ZIL-131) or armored tractor at speeds up to 80 krn/hr.
