Originally a rural lane leading out of Oxford, Cowley Road began to develop in the 19th century as industrialization transformed the area. The expansion of Oxford’s population and the establishment of local industries, such as the Morris Motors car factory in nearby Cowley, spurred the growth of housing and businesses along Cowley Road.
