Summary: Trouble never came from Costello but he continues to strip the reef but he is not spearing any fish and certainly not Blueback, he is holed up nursing his sore head.

During summer his skill and confidence grows and he spends a lot of time on the boat, sometimes he sees a big red jet boat and his mother tells him it is Costello, the new abalone diver and the fisheries are watching him because he takes everything he sees. Abel is worried about Blueback but his mother says there is nothing they can do.
