Cooperite is a grey mineral consisting of platinum sulfide (PtS), generally in combinations with sulfides of other elements such as palladium and nickel (PdS and NiS). Its general formula is (Pt,Pd,Ni)S .

Named by F. Wartenweiler in 1928 in honor of Richard A. Cooper (1890–1972), South Africa, who first described the mineral. Cooperite is different from braggite and contains only negligible admixtures of Pd and Ni - in contrast, braggite is stabilised by Pd (and Ni) contents.

Occurrence: A significant platinum ore mineral, found in ultramafics, gabbros, dunites, chromitites, typically layered; in massive chalcopyrite–pyrrhotite orebodies; in alluvial placers.

2003年2月20日 · Although the only unambiguous way of distinguishing between cooperite and braggite is to obtain structural information through X-ray diffraction or equivalent techniques, most identification of Pt-Pd±Ni sulphides is based on microanalytical techniques due to the small grain size of most platinum-group minerals.

Cooperite, braggite, and vysotskite are the only Pt-Pd sulfide minerals with ideal compositions in the system Pt-Pd-S. Cooperite is ideally PtS, braggite (Pd,Pt)S, and vysotskite PdS. All analyses, however, report the presence of significant amounts Ni, so mineralogically they must be considered as being in the system Pt-Pd-Ni-S.
