After steering is activated, sampling a vessel on the long axis using a linear probe can make it challenging to define the flow direction. Color Doppler shows the blood flow pattern across the prostheses. In bioprosthetic TPVs the diastolic flow jet is smooth and wide, with no apparent aliasing. In mechanical TPVs, the antegrade color Doppler jet direction and pattern may differ among variable valve types (ball cage, bileaflet valves).

The laminar flow appears on the display as a homogeneous image of one color. The turbulent flow has a mosaic pattern and contains different colors. When examining with color Doppler, two-dimensional Echocardiography gives a two-dimensional image and a Color Doppler superimposes the flow color-coded image on it.
