Coach in the late 80’s or early 90’s was actually in prison for 14 years for being involved in the drug game. When he got out he was about to go back to the streets.

If Coach dies and if Rochelle is near his body, she may ask if "Coach" is his first or last name. Though unconfirmed by Valve, Coach's voice actor, Chad Coleman, said he believed Coach's full name is "Wendell Jones" in an interview. My own belief is Coach's name is whatever you want it to be.
