MODELING A C&NW HAMMERHEAD RSD-5 By Dennis Eggert Photos by the author unless noted Prototype History: In the mid-1950s, the C&NW was acquiring new diesel locomotives from all of the major builders. Locomotives built by EMD, Alco, Fairbanks-Morse and Baldwin and others made up the C&NW’s diesel locomotive roster.

C&NW 1689 is a diesel freight locomotive designed as a “road switcher” for general freight train service. It is an RSD-series locomotive, a type developed from the RS-series that has six powered axles instead of only four for improved tractive effort. This is one of only two RSD-5 type locomotives preserved.

The C&NW had three of these RSD5s that were equipped with dynamic brakes and steam generators which forced the short hood to be taller. They were known as Hammerheads to the railfan community. There were two of them left in my 1976 modeling era but with most of the short hood inlet and outlet vents plated over.

2014年6月11日 · CNW 411 CB&Q 9911 and.....the newest addition, an Alco RSD-5, CNW 1689. WOW!! What a great looking Alco. Its a three axle truck Alco used in communter service years ago on the CNW. Nice looking engine! The Lineup facing West. As I mention, the 1689 might operate for diesel daze. Come out and check it out!

2020年8月22日 · Atlas recently came out with RSD-5's painted and lettered for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad with a built-in LokSound Select decoder. The CNW herald is only on the cab sides, and there is small CNW lettering on each end. A perfect starting point for relettering the locomotive for SVL.

2021年1月15日 · Atlas Model Railroad Co. has released a new run of HO scale Alco RSD-5 diesel locomotives in its Classic line. The six-axle road switcher features a dual-mode ESU LokSound decoder, improved tooling on the turbo exhaust stack (air- and water-cooled versions), and factory-installed and painted wire grab irons.
