Lately, there's been quite a few pics of the C628's originally built for N&W but bought by CNW for ore service up north. Using Alco's tried in proven 251C model prime mover the C628 was rated at 2,750-2,800 horsepower and it, along with its successors became legendary for their ability to pull serious tonnage. Unfortunately, as powerful as they were railroads came to dislike them since they caused significant wear to the track structure.

At the time, the big Alco's were the heaviest units on the C&NW and were intended for system-wide mainline service. Two years later, the C628's replaced the aging Fairbanks-Morse H16-66's in ore service in Northern Michigan. The Alco's were well suited for these low-speed heavy ore trains and were finally replaced in October, 1990 with SD50's.

Primarily used for heavy-haul road freight service throughout the US, the C-628 generated a total of 2,750 hp, and was part of the American Locomotive Company’s (ALCO) Century Locomotive Line. A total of 185 units were built by ALCO for railroads in the US, Mexico and Australia between 1963 and 1968.
