The GE C40-8M is a 6-axle diesel locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems from 1990 to 1994. It is part of the GE Dash 8 Series of freight locomotives, and is often referred to as a Dash 8-40CM.

Three units were rebuilt without drivers cabs in 1994 and designated model CM40-8ML (L for Locotrol) and numbered 5663, 5664, 5665, and another view of 5665. Instead of a cab, they had a cabinet where the Locotrol equipment was installed.

The four CM40-8M rebuilds 9411, 9418, 9419 and 9422 were used by John Holland on the Koodaideri line construction and once finished were subsequently scrapped at Sell and Parker in Port Hedland, February 2022.

Previously the fleet consisted of forty CM40-8M and CM40-8 or Dash-8 locomotives of which were originally spread across three variants: Four new build CM39-8 (later upgraded to CM40-8); Two new build CM40-8 units, all of which were built in Western Australia by Goninan;
