I'm going to sand down the hood of my pickup to bare metal, prime, sand, and then paint and clear coat. 2020年12月22日 · The clear is peeling from my mercedes, base is still alright. I hit it with polishing compound to blend and polish it take out the opaque clear down. The problem is I don't think the base coat has hardener in it so it is really soft and seems to scratch and blemish easily. Basically, it is what it is, it will look better than failed clear coat.

It wouldn't help the pealing clear, but it would give the paint below it a shine. By the same token, it wouldn't do anything for the dead paint on the hood of the Samurai. It was a base coat/clear coat and the clear I'm using is a two part clear so I use a spray gun. I find that clear in a can just will not hold up over time. It turns milky and dull unless you buff it yearly.

Just for kicks, I took a patch on the top of the fender and cleaned it up and sprayed it with some rattle-can clear gloss I had laying around, It really doesn't look that bad--on a 25-year old truck.
