A local inflammatory lesion (chagoma) may occur after the entry of the parasite in acute Chagas’ disease. The chagoma contains mononuclear cell infiltrate, interstitial oedema, and intracellular amastigotes. Biopsy samples from affected lymph nodes also demonstrate hyperplasia and amastigotes in reticular cells.
