The model used General Motors' model D37 traction motors and could produce a respectable 43,000 pounds of continuous tractive effort, and 62,000 pounds of starting effort, for a locomotive of its small size.

The EMD SW9 is a model of diesel switcher locomotives built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between November 1950 and December 1953. Additional SW9s were built by General Motors Diesel in London Ontario Canada from December 1950 to March 1953. Power was provided by an EMD 567B 12-cylinder engine, producing 1,200 horsepower (895 kW). [1]

In 1940, EMC built 3 drawbar-connected cab-and-booster NW2 sets for moving trains short distances from one railroad to another. These transfer units were nicknamed "Cow-Calf". Unlike Slugs, the "B" units had prime mover diesel engines, with exhaust stacks and radiators.
