2018年9月14日 · The Carna Botnet started out as an ethical hacking experiment in 2012. A cybersecurity researcher used Nmap Scripting Engine (NSE) to scan for random devices that had the default telnet login username and password. They found that over 100,000 devices had these features and could easily be accessed.

2015年9月22日 · We used these devices to build a distributed port scanner to scan all IPv4 addresses. These scans include service probes for the most common ports, ICMP ping, reverse DNS and SYN scans. We analyzed some of the data to get an estimation of the IP address usage. The full download is 568GB large.

On March 17, 2013, the authors of an anonymous email to the "Full Disclosure" mailing list announced that last year they conducted a full probing of the entire IPv4 Internet. They claimed they used a botnet (named "carna" botnet) created by infecting machines vulnerable due to use of default login/password pairs (e.g., admin/admin).

At this point the botnet was now fully built and ready to conduct a full scan of the internet. [PIANO] Researcher looked at this creation and decided to call it the Carna Botnet. Botnets are sometimes named after Roman or Greek gods and Carna was the Roman goddess known to protect the vital organs of the physical body.
