Between air and water: the plunge dive of the Cape Gannet Morus ...
In January and December 2002, we monitored the biomechanics of plunge diving in 25 free-ranging Cape Gannets Morus capensis using a recently developed, rapid-sampling acceleration and depth recorder. Our data provide the first detailed description of this highly specialized foraging technique.

description of the plunging and diving sequences in Cape Gannets enabled us to test the following three questions: 1 Do Cape Gannets use only the momentum of the plunge to reach a depth? 2 Is plunge diving the only hunting technique used by Cape Gannets? 3 How efficient is plunge diving in terms of measur-able impact and loss of momentum? METHODS

Design and Experiment of a Bionic Gannet for Plunge-Diving
2013年7月1日 · A bionic gannet was developed based on the analysis of the body configuration and skeleton structure and the motion pattern of wings of a gannet in plunge-diving. In the current prototype, adjustable sweptback wings were implemented so as to achieve different body shapes for entering water.

Constant flapping-and-gliding flight pattern and sharp plunge-diving when foraging are unique within range. Dingy brown immatures share the overall shape and flight pattern of adults. At sea, albatrosses hardly ever flap in flight.
