The vz. 38 is a semi-automatic pistol manufactured from 1939 to 1945 and chambered in .380 ACP (in Europe called 9×17mm Browning Short). The barrel is attached to the frame by a hinge, allowing for very easy disassembly.

The ČZ-38 is an unlocked breech double action only pistol chambered for the 9x17mm Browning short (.380 ACP). The design features a barrel, the front of which is fixed in a barrel mount, which in turn pivots on a pin through the front of the frame.

The Czech vz.38 was developed by Ceska Zbrojovka (CZ) as a replacement for the vz.22/24 then in use with the Czechoslovakian army. The vz.24 proved to be too complicated to work reliably in the field and this was a major consideration when adopting a replacement.
