Peter Safar (12 April 1924 – 3 August 2003) was an Austrian anesthesiologist of Czech descent. He is credited with pioneering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Safar was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1924 into a prominent Jewish medical family. [1] .

In 1961, Safar’s desire to create a department of anes-thesiology at a major university was realized when he was offered the opportunity to become chair of the department at the University of Pittsburgh. Here he established one of the world’s first critical care medicine programs and one of the first multidisciplinary inten-sive care units.
