The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.3 percent in December on a seasonally adjusted basis, after rising 0.1 percent in November, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 3.4 percent before seasonal adjustment.

Food prices increased 2.7 percent, reflecting a 1.3-percent increase in prices for food at home and a 5.2-percent increase in prices for food away from home. Prices for four of the six major food at home groups increased from 2022 to 2023.

Compared to December 2022 CPI inflation, CPI inflation fell by 3.1 percentage points, from 6.5 percent in December 2022 to 3.4 in December 2023.
The most recent CPI release as of December 2023 reports year-over-year inflation at 3.3 percent. Month-over-month, prices increased 0.3 percent. Since January 2021, prices have increased 17.6 percent. This means that the average family of four is paying $15,576 per year or $1298 per month to purchase the same goods and services as in January 2021.
