Capacitor discharge ignition (CDI) or thyristor ignition is a type of automotive electronic ignition system which is widely used in outboard motors, motorcycles, lawn mowers, chainsaws, small engines, gas turbine -powered aircraft, and some cars.

CDU stands for “Capacitor Discharge Unit,” and it is a device used in model railway layouts to ensure that the solenoid and SEEP point motors operate reliably and consistently. When a point motor is switched, it requires a surge of electricity to move the rails into the correct position.

The purpose of capacitor discharge units is to store up electricity in a capacitor. The electrical charge is released, on throwing a switch, as a burst of a much larger current than the transformer can supply directly and so switch the point motors reliably. Think of a bucket under a dripping tap.
