Buckfast is a caffeinated and sweetened fortified tonic wine. Its origins date back to 1897 when the nephew of a French monk visiting Buckfast Abbey in Devon, England brought with him a recipe for a Tonic Wine. During the early 1930s, the monks sought to develop sales of their tonic wine, which was more medicinal at the time.
