Blackwell came into existence during the Cherokee Outlet Opening on September 16, 1893, in the run known as the Cherokee Strip Land Run. The town is named for A. J. Blackwell, who was the dominant force in its founding.

The Blackwell Times first appeared on November 1, 1893. D. D. W. and M. E. Walker served as editors, and the motto for their paper was, “Republican in Principle; But Devoted to the Upbuilding of Blackwell and the Development of County K.”

A.J. Blackwell (Andrew Jackson Blackwell) (January 29, 1842 - June 19, 1903) was the founder and namesake of Blackwell, Kay County, Oklahoma. Blackwell, the city, was founded in September 1893 as of one of the Cherokee Allotments. [1]

Housed in the 1912 Electric Park Pavilion, the Top of Oklahoma Historical Society Museum, founded in the 1970’s, contains items as far back as the 1893 Cherokee Strip Land Run to present day memorabilia. The museum is also an important part of Blackwell’s popular Barn Quilt and Geocache Trail.
