Abstract: We estimated lengths at ages 1 through 5 of black crappies from 964 water bodies (natural lakes, reservoirs, impoundments, and rivers) and white crappies from 76 water bodies in Minnesota. We report herein mean lengths at ages 1 through 5 of both species by lake class, reservoirs (man-made and natural), impoundments, and rivers.
Estimating Black Crappie Age: An Assessment of Dorsal Spines and Scales …
2011年2月15日 · We evaluated the use of dorsal spines and scales as nonlethal alternatives to otoliths for estimating the ages of black crappies P. nigromaculatus using 111 fish collected from two Minnesota lakes. Among-reader precision was similar for ages estimated from scales and dorsal spines (coefficients of variation [CVs] = 10–14%), but the precision ...
Accuracy and Precision of Age Estimation of Crappies
2011年1月8日 · Age estimation accuracy for black crappie otoliths averaged 99.6%, whereas accuracy for scales was 77.6%. Accuracy of age estimates from white crappie otoliths averaged 98.5%, whereas accuracy of estimates from scales averaged 80.4%. For both species, age estimation precision was higher for otoliths than for scales.
Abstract - We determined precision and bias of age estimates of Black Crappie Pomoxis nigromaculatus from 49 Minnesota populations using annuli counts on scales and whole otoliths, and then determined the effects of age, population, gill net catch per lift (CPUE; an index of Black Crappie density) sample month, sex, latitude, longitude, lake siz...

aged black crappie seemed to be comparable, tests comparing sizes of fish within length-frequencyand otolith age groups indicated the contrary. In 1982, differences between sizes ofage I black crappie were significant at P ~0.01 and age II at P ~ 0.001. Differences were significant at P ~0.001 for 1983 age II fish, significant at
Comparison of Otolith and Scale Age Characteristics for Black …
Within-structure (i.e., among-reader) and between-structure agreements in both population samples were 94% or greater for both scales and otoliths from fish of all ages. Our results indicated that for black crappies from South Dakota waters, precision of ages determined from scales and otoliths was similar.
Use of Otoliths to Age Black Crappie from Florida - SEAFWA
We consider otoliths useful for accurately aging black crappie in Florida. The scale method and length-frequency analysis were not adequate for accurately aging and measuring growth rate of black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus) collected in Florida.
Crappie Age
2004年10月11日 · Most Crappie are mature enough to spawn by their third year of "age" ... even though some may only be 8" long (from one lake) and others are 10" long (from another, more fertile lake - or one containing more optimum conditions and food sources). Trying to "age" a fish, for the average joe, is a "best guess" scenario.
