Rams are from the Rio Orinoco as well and not suitable to an Amazon biotope. Assuming you want a true biotope, the aquascape will depend on the fish you select. In order to create a true biotope, I would choose a centerpiece species.

Leaf litter is optional though and is certainly not needed to create a biotope, many people prefer 'clean" biotopes with everything except botanicals. But it adds to the pizzaz and the "oohs" and "aahs".
