Ewen was a collegiate football player at the University of Iowa and later became a powerlifter and a USA Powerlifting champion. He also won a state championship in high-school wrestling. Upon signing with WWE in 2009, Ewen was assigned to its developmental brand Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) under the ring name Big E Langston.

Oba Femi is the current champion in his first reign. He defeated previous champion Trick Williams and Eddy Thorpe in a triple threat match at NXT: New Year's Evil on January 7, 2025, in Los Angeles, California.

When Big E signed with WWE, it looked like more punishment was on the menu for his opponents. That was the case as he bulldozed his way to the NXT Championship, then debuted on Raw and captured the Intercontinental Title.

In WWE, Big E is a former one-time WWE Champion, one-time NXT Champion, two-time Intercontinental Champion, eight-time tag team champion, and the winner of the 2021 men's Money in the Bank ladder match. In 2009, Ewen signed a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).
