Flak towers (German: Flaktürme) were large, above-ground, anti-aircraft gun blockhouse towers constructed by Nazi Germany. There were a total of 8 flak tower complexes in the cities of Berlin (three), Hamburg (two), and Vienna (three) from 1940 onwards.

2019年4月30日 · In Berlin, three sets of flak towers were created: in Friedrichshain, Humboldthain, and in the Zoo/Tiergarten. A set of towers was made up of the G-Tower (larger, held the heavy cannons) and the L-Tower (smaller, held the radar and optical devices).

2021年5月5日 · During World War Two the lower floors of the Berlin Flak Tower were used as a bomb shelter for thousands of the city’s population. Three flak towers were constructed and, after the war, the only Berlin Flak Tower to survive was the Humboldthain tower.

The Berlin flak towers (Flaktürme, singular Flakturm) were originally built as a response to an attack on Berlin by a relatively small force of British bombers. Hitler ordered the construction of these towers after the first bomber attack on Berlin by the RAF on 25 August 1940.

The Berlin Zoo Flak Tower, or Flakturm Tiergarten, was the first of several anti-aircraft gun towers ordered to be built by Adolf Hitler after the British Royal Air Force bombers raided Beriln, Germany on 25 Aug 1940, which caused much embarrassment to the German leadership.
