In almost every iteration, the Penny is a memento from Batman's encounter with the Penny Plunderer. Not all pennies are little. The Giant Penny is one of the most iconic pieces of memorabilia found in the Batcave along with the Giant Joker Card and the Mechanical T-Rex.

Joe Coyne AKA, "The Penny Plunderer" is a golden age foe of Batman who became obsessed with pennies after a long life of penny-related bad luck. He is generally seen as being amongst the Dark Knight's most laughable rogues, and is responsible for the Giant Penny which has become a staple of the Batcave .

He later learned to embrace the symbol of his failure, and carved out a corner of the underworld by specializing in penny-themed crimes. His downfall was ironically caused by pennies, the symbol of his failure and he was eventually defeated by Batman .

Batman was tied to it, and Two-Face triggered a giant coin flipper. He intended it to crush Batman (if it landed bat-side down) or to have the impact shatter his bones (bat-side up). Batman got himself loose mid-air, and foiled the caper. In the comics, the Giant Penny is a trophy of his defeat of Joe Coyne, who committed penny-themed crimes.

2020年7月7日 · The Penny Plunderer has an appropriately hapless end to his origin story. When Batman tracks him down again, he barricades himself in a room to use a payphone and call his gang. The phone, however, only accepts nickels. Coyne exclaims he's been, "BETRAYED BY PENNIES!" as Batman and Robin burst through the door.
