Babar, the King of the Elephants tells his children, the story of his early life and how his life was changed after his mother is killed by a hunter. When a baby elephant is abandoned on the doorstep of the Rhino palace, Rataxes finds himself acting as an unwilling father.

Babar is the King of Celesteville. As a young elephant, he is forced leave as his mother is killed by the Hunter during a jungle poaching expedition. He subsequently flees, ending up in Paris, where he is adopted by Madame and learns city ways, such as formal education and clothing.
