The BSA B40 was a series of 350 cc (21 cu in) unit construction single-cylinder OHV four-stroke motorcycles made by the Birmingham Small Arms Company. Developed from the BSA C15, the machines were produced between 1961 and 1967 for civilian use.

The B40 with telescopic front forks was a modern motorcycle in its day and was used for convoy control, messenger services and the carriage of any small stores, which could be fitted into the pannier bags. The carriage of messages was an important function at a time when radios were few, and less reliable than now.

The B40WD makes use of a B40 350cc unit single with an external Vokes oil filter mounted on a bracket above the primary chaincase. The British Army has never had a clear policy on what size of engine is optimum for their use and has largely vacillated between 350cc and 500c machines.

Done up and finished it would be worth £1400, compared to the matchless it is 120 pounds lighter and a revier beast with more HP but with less planted handling.
