In September 1949 Northern Pacific ordered six A-B-B-A sets of F7's from EMD and these were delivered as NP 6007 to 6012 and were all assigned to the Yellowstone Division. The 6011 set was involved in a collision with a W-2 Mikado steam locomotive at Wibaux, MT on 9-20-54.

There was a short lived F5, that was a late model F3 with F7 components. Then the F7 came in 1949, then the F9 in 1953 to 1960. All of them were 4-axle locomotives. The F Series was available in two configurations; a cabbed unit, or A unit, and a cabless, or B unit. There was also a passenger version for each one that was 4 feet longer.

This gem is ahead of two cabbed' F7's! Say What? With a brand new ACe in the background, these ancient F units sit away from the crowd at Glendive! I've never seen anyone shoot or even talk about these being here!

The F7 was primarily a freight-hauling locomotive, however they were also used on passenger trains by some railroads. 2,393 F7A units were built and 1,463 F7B units were built. An EMD 16cyl 567B prime mover powered an EMD D-12 generator to provide the power to the four traction motors in the familiar Blomberg B trucks.
