The BMW R50S was a family of sporty motorcycles that debuted in 1960. The R50S was a more powerful evolution of the BMW R50 that was equipped with a high compression 494cc horizontally opposed twin engine that generated 35hp. This engine was paired to a 4 speed transmission that sent drive to the rear wheel via shaft drive.

The R50/2 was largely an improved version of the BMW R50, featuring the same engine, but with an output of 26hp from the 500cc horizontally opposed twin powerplant. These shaft drive motorcycles were equipped with a 4 speed transmission, and in production until 1969.
