BMW E46/5 316ti. The N40 is based on the BMW N42 engine and uses the same crankcase, pistons and bore size of 84 mm (3.3 in). The redline is 6,500 rpm. Unlike the N42, the N40 does not have Valvetronic (variable valve lift).

2023年10月16日 · N40/N42/N46 is basically the same engine flawed with multiple mechanical design errors. The predecessor M43 has issues with crankshaft bearings. Still more reliable than any N4x. The successor N43 is likely the worst BMW engine ever. It's a N46 fitted with direct injection. I have both N42 and M54 engines in my E46s.

The BMW N40 is an straight-4 DOHC engine which replaced the 1.6 litre versions of the M43. It was produced from 2001-2004 and only sold in several countries, where taxes favoured cars with smaller displacement engines.

An 1800cc N46 powered the 2003-2005 E46 316i/ti until the E90 three series started. In 2007 the N43 entered service, it had Valvetronic and direct fuel injection. It replaced the N45 which died with the pre-facelift E81 one series.

2014年6月26日 · I have recently bought a BMW E46 316i N40 engine. I'm experiencing power loss and hesitation. When stationnary, I increase the engine RPM and after releasing the pedal the RPM drops less than expected which makes it vibrating. Moreover, I have changed these parts to newer OEM parts. I'm using MaxiScan509 to determine faulty codes.

It featured 2 variants, the N43B16 and the N43B20. This engine suffers from a couple of reliability issues, such as the common timing chain guide issue where plastic pieces end up in the oil pickup leading to oil starvation. The N43 also suffers from injector, EGR and water pump issues, as well as NOx sensor problems.

The engine was used in the 3 Series (E46) in two variants, as 316i with 1796 cc and 115 hp and as 318i with 1995 cc and 143 hp. At the same time, the BMW N40 with reduced displacement without Valvetronic was developed for certain world markets .
