Conventional wisdom says that the launch of the G/S in 1980 saved BMW Motorrad from extinction. But the story goes further back than that, because the idea for the G/S came from BMW’s successes in European off-road events.

2023年1月25日 · This is a rare BMW R68 ISDT Special, in many respects its one of the early progenitors of modern enduro and adventure motorcycles, and it’s certainly the godfather of the iconic BMW GS series. The “ISDT” in the name stands for the “International Six Days Trial,” the oldest and one of the toughest off-road motorcycle events in the world.

In 1980 it won the German and European enduro championships, plus the prestigious ISDT. The bike inspired the cultish BMW R80 G/S (Gelände/Straße, or off-road/street) built from ’81 to ‘87. That machine married the 900 cc R80/7 engine to a strengthened R65 chassis, and was the only BMW twin to be unaffected by the launch of the K series.

BMW factory records show that this motorcycle was completed on 28th May 1953 as an R67/2 model and sent to the Test Department to be prepared for that year’s International Six Days Trial (ISDT) held in Czechoslovakia.
