BMW decided to return to Formula One in the late 1990s by signing an exclusive contract with the Williams team, which needed a new long-term engine supplier after the withdrawal of Renault in 1997. The programme resulted in the creation of a new V10 engine which made its race début in the Williams FW22 in 2000.

This is the only Formula One race that BMW has won as a full work (factory backed) team. BMW has been in Formula One since the beginning of the World Drivers' Championship in 1950 . BMW entered several races in the 1950s and 1960s.

The most successful F1 drivers in history are seven-times world champions Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher. In 2021 the former became the first and so far only driver to date to win 100 grands prix. While Schumacher retired from F1 at the end of 2012, Hamilton continues to race.
