It looks like 1983 was the cut off for the E21 and the M20 was put into the E30 320i which was only available in europe. (Did'nt catch that the first time) In the first picture it shows the lower crankshaft mark and the distributor rotor mark to get TDC.

How to replace the heater core in a 1983 BMW 733i? Removal: Remove the instrument panel. Remove the Airflow Control Box. Disconnect the condensation hoses. The evaporator/heater case can now be separated and the core removed. Reverse the procedure to install. What could prevent a 1984 BMW 733i from starting? It could be a tab that is missing.
