BEAS-2B are epithelial cells isolated from normal human bronchial epithelium derived from autopsies of noncancerous individuals. The cells retain the ability to undergo squamous differentiation in response to serum and can be used to screen chemical and biological agents for the ability to induce or affect differentiation and/or carcinogenesis.

Because of general recognition for its bronchial epithelial origin, the BEAS-2B cell line has been widely used as an in vitro cell model in a large variety of studies associated with respiratory diseases including lung carcinogenesis.

BEAS-2B is an immortalized and non-tumorigenic human lung epithelial cell line. It is an extensively used in vitro model to study lung cells' response to various carcinogens and toxicants. In addition, it is a valuable research tool for studying different respiratory infections and diseases, such as COVID-19 and lung carcinomas.

We have evaluated two primary human donors of bronchial epithelial cells and Calu-3, BEAS-2B, and BEAS-2B R1 cell culture systems as ALI models of the airway epithelium for asthma research. For the first time, cell lines were directly compared to primary cells ( Table 3 ).
