I believe the unit you're thinking of is BCOL 808, a C-425 that plunged into Seton Lake in mid-February 1980, unfortunately killing the brakeman. It was eventually recovered in 1981, and rebuilt at BCOL 800 in 1982.

Lead unit #2458 became BCOL 808, wrecked in Feb 1980, rebuilt as BCOL 800 and retired/used for parts in 1990.

EL SW8 368 works at Binghamton NY. She was originally DL&W 508, later became Conrail 8697, Standard Steel 368. EL C425 2458 would later become BCOL 808, and take an ill-advised dip in Seton Lake BC. Slide mount says DEC 74. I'd hazard a guess this image was taken early the morning of November 30, 1974.
