Located about 100 kilometres south of Sydney, Avon Dam was the third and largest of the four dams constructed to collect water from the Illawarra Plateau. Created by damming the Avon River and completed in 1927, Avon Dam's main role today is to supply water to the Illawarra region.

The 72-metre-high Avon Dam holds water from a 140-square-kilometre catchment, forming a lake of 1,055 hectares, with a capacity of 214,360 megalitres. The dams of the Upper Nepean collect water from the catchments of the Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon and Nepean rivers, which are tributaries of the Upper Hawkesbury-Nepean River.

This trail starts from a car park in Shipley Bridge and follows the lane along the River Avon as it winds across the moorland. Eventually, you’ll cross the river and continue on the other side all the way to Avon Dam Reservoir.

Cattle, sheep and Dartmoor ponies can often be seen grazing alongside the reservoir, on the grassy hills that roll up and away. The dam itself is just as spectacular as the views you can enjoy from it and the Avon Dam Reservoir is vast and beautiful as well.
