Most people who know Aveda know it is a beauty industry pioneer in environmental sustainability, organic and natural ingredients, and socially responsible practices. What they may not know is the extraordinary vision and humble beginnings behind it. Aveda’s origin story begins with one figure: Horst Rechelbacher.

Aveda manufactures skin and body care, cosmetics, perfume (internally called "pure-fume"), hair color, and hair care products, and trains students in cosmetology, massage, and esthiology at the Aveda Institutes in Minneapolis, New York City, Des Moines, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Orlando, Denver, Winnipeg, and many other cities.

Aveda started as the vision of environmentalist Horst Rechelbacher, when he discovered the importance of connecting health and beauty with the earths natural aromas from plants. The offspring of a herbalist, Horst had a natural flair for scents and the plants they came from.
