The Atrebates (Gaulish: *Atrebatis, 'dwellers, land-owners, possessors of the soil') were a Belgic tribe of the Iron Age and the Roman period, originally dwelling in the Artois region. [1] After the tribes of Gallia Belgica were defeated by Caesar in 57 BC, 4,000 Atrebates participated in the Battle of Alesia in 53, led by their chief Commius.

Closely related to the north-western Gaulish tribe of Atrebates, they were at their most powerful in the first and second centuries BC. The name Atrebates means 'settlers' or 'inhabitants' and, given that Belgic elements seem to have settled the region and intermixed with earlier Celtic populations, perhaps both are equally valid.

By the middle of the first century BC, the Atrebates (or Atrebati according to Ptolemy) were located in the far north of modern France. Their territory was centred on the tribal capital at Nemetacum Atrebatum or Nemetocenna (modern Arras on the River Scarpe, south-west of modern Lille), and close to the modern ports of Boulogne and Calais.

The Atrebates were a Belgic tribe of the Iron Age and the Roman period, originally dwelling in the Artois region. An offshoot of the Belgic tribe probably entered Britain before 54 BC, successively ruled by kings Commius, Tincommius, Eppillus and Verica.

The Atrebates were a tribe of British Celts living in the area of modern Sussex, Berkshire, and Hampshire. During the 1st and 2nd centuries BC, they were among the most powerful of British tribes, maintaining strong links with related tribes in Gaul.

Because of their location in Britain, the Atrebates were one of the more successful tribes and also one of the most civilised. For many years before the Romans arrived, they had been trading with the tribes in Europe.

Atrebates. A British tribe and civitas. The tribe seems to have either origins or close relationships in Gaul where a tribe of the same name is recorded by Caesar. Indeed, the king of the Gallic Atrebates, Commius, fled to Britain and appears to have established a dynasty

Commius had established himself as king of the Atrebates in Britain by around 30 BC, the Atrebates occupied the territory to the south of the River Thames that included present-day Hampshire and Sussex. He issued coins depicting a stylized, triple-tailed Celtic horse, from Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester).
