SVE2, in Armv9, will extend SVE for use in DSP, ML, 5G and xR [AR,VR] workloads within the CPU.

Apr 15, 2012 · SVE2 on the other hand was designed as a complete functional replacement for NEON and superset of SVE with ARMv9-A in mind as it is now a mandatory requirement on the ground floor of first major ISA revision in 9 years. IMHO they did not make it mandatory to a later increment of ARMv8-A because they did not want to clutter the standard.

Apr 15, 2012 · Android hasn't even dropped AArch32 yet, it will be at least a decade before it could conceivably go ARMv9 only. Given that there is no "vast" (more like near zero) desktop/laptop ARM ecosystem, that clearly wasn't a factor in the Mac's ISA switch - it was their OWN iOS-based ARM ecosystem that paved the way for a successful ISA switch.

Oct 5, 2020 · Another big thing is the new ISA ARMv9 with 2048-bit SVE2 vectors for A15 next year (we know ARMs Matterhorn ARMv9 arrives next year). There is a chance that A14 this year will be ARMv9 with 2048-bit SVE2 too. IIRC Apple introduced first 64-bit core (A7 cyclone 2013 with 4xALUs) two years before ARM introduced their first 64-bit Cortex A35/72.

Jan 31, 2015 · If so the extension into the 2040s they agreed to with ARM last year would clear the way for ARMv9 stuff from Apple. While I'm throwing that out as a possibility I'm pretty skeptical. If that was necessary for ARMv9 adoption and Apple wanted to adopt ARMv9 they would have negotiated that extension several years earlier.
