Araneus is a genus of common orb-weaving spiders. It includes about 650 species, among which are the European garden spider and the barn spider. The genus was erected by Carl Alexander Clerck in 1757.

Many of the spiders we commonly call orb-weavers belong to the genus Araneus. Famous for their amazing geometric orb webs, these spiders can often be spotted hanging upside down in the centre of their webs or hiding in a retreat at the side. Currently (as of 2023), 560 species of Araneus are recognised.

It is an orb-weaver spider found in Europe, where it is native, and North America, where it was introduced. A. diadematus has a holarctic distribution throughout Europe and across North America, from southern Canada to Mexico, and from British Columbia to Newfoundland. [4][5]
